The former Region II of Nicaragua (León and Chinandega) located at the western part of the country is the most hardly hit region. Both provinces have 23 municipalities and 22 of those are devastated.

Half the victims are from this region.

Five municipalities in the north of Chinandega are not reached by roads yet.

Starvation is such that only days ago a helicopter carrying food landed by mistake in Somotillo and to the pilot´s surprise, victims of the hurricane hurried and assalted the plane, taking all the food with them.

Last friday, Fundación Movilización Social tried to deliver medicines to Somotillo and had to go back because the shortcuts that had been pointed as a possibility to get through, had too much mud and sand.

Medicines were taken to Posoltega and Villanueva.
